The Jackie Stewart

Dyslexia Friendly Schools Award

"Dyslexia is best described as a combination of abilities and difficulties that affect the learning process in one or more of reading, spelling, writing. Accompanying weaknesses may be identified in areas of speed of processing, short-term memory, sequencing and organisation, auditory and/or visual perception, spoken language and motor skills. It is particularly related to mastering and using written language, which may include alphabetic, numeric and musical notation.

Some dyslexics have outstanding creative skills. Others have strong oral skills. Some have no outstanding talents. They all have strengths. Dyslexia can occur despite normal intellectual ability and teaching. It is independent of socio-economic or language background."

The Dyslexia Handbook 2002, p67.

As all parents will be aware Busby Primary School is currently working in partnership with Stravaigan Consultancy to achieve the Jackie Stewart Dyslexia Friendly Schools Award. Letters informing parents of the process will be sent to all families and parents are encouraged to contact Liz McKelvie at Stravaigan Consultancy (see details below) to discuss their views of how well the school identifies and supports dyslexic pupils.

What have we been doing?

Over the past session the school has worked hard to develop its policy and practice which supports all pupils with additional support needs. We are in the process of implementing the new East Renfrewshire policy on staged intervention which is the process by which we identify pupils’ needs. A draft copy of our additional support needs policy, which explains this process in full, can be viewed by clicking on the link on the previous page or can be obtained from the school if requested. If any parent has a concern about their child’s needs and learning at any time then you are encouraged to contact the school in the first instance to discuss the matter.

Julie Oswald, Principal Teacher, is the School’s Additional Support Needs Coordinator and will be happy to discuss any concerns or clarify if you feel that your child is experiencing difficulties which require further support or attention.

Parents have the right to access details of any screening or assessment results carried out on their child by the school. Please contact either Mrs Oswald or Mr Roach if you wish to discuss these further.
