PRIMARY 1 INDUCTION

We have a very successful induction programme which begins in the spring with P6 Buddies visiting the nursery to become familiar to our pre-school children.  They come along to read to the children and join in their play.  The nursery staff take every opportunity to involve the nursery children in “visits” around the school throughout the year.  Our planned programme from March to June is as follows.

  •             P1 and nursery teachers exchange classes

  •             Child Development Officers take small groups of children to visit P1 class

  •             P6 buddies visit nursery

  •             Nursery/school staff meet to discuss children’s progress

  •             P1/Nursery teachers carry out Baseline Assessment in nursery

  •             Pre-school children and parents are invited to 2 afternoon visits in June and school lunch

  •             P1 –children start full-time in August

  •             P7 buddies assist in P1

  •             P1 Parents Curriculum afternoon in September

Although the majority of our P1 children come from our own nursery, every effort is made to include children who will be joining us from other establishments.  A member of the Management Team will also try to visit each child in the nursery setting.

PRIMARY 1 REGISTRATION

Registration takes place in January for children due to start school the following August.  Dates, times and appropriate age of children will be advertised in the local press, the library, the Post Office and the nursery.  Lots of useful information is given at this time.  Prospective parents are welcome to visit the school at a mutually suitable time.

TRANSFER TO SECONDARY

Pupils normally transfer to secondary school to continue their education at the end of their primary seven-year.  Normally this will be between the ages of 11˝ and 12˝.

The Executive Committee on Education made changes to the transfer arrangements at its meeting on 25th October 2001.

A placing request will be needed in order to move a pupil attending a denomination school to a non-denominational school.  A placing request will also be required for a pupil to move from a non-denominational school to a denominational school.

Pupils enrolled in this school ON or BEFORE 25th October 2001, may transfer to Mearns Castle High School.  A placing request can be made to attend any other school.

For children enrolled in this school AFTER 25th October 2001:

  • Pupils living outwith the catchment of Mearns Castle High School will be expected to attend their local catchment secondary school.

  •  A placing request must be made if you want your son or daughter to attend any school other than your local catchment secondary school.
Parents will be advised of the transfer arrangements in December of the pupil’s primary seven year.  A placing request application form will be provided at this time.
