Active Schools

Initiated in August 2004, Kirkhill Primary is part of the East Renfrewshire Council Active Schools Programme, which is supported by Sportscotland. The school has achieved the ‘Here's Health’ award, and “Active Schools” as an integral part of being health promoting. Barry Cook is our active school co-ordinator and is based at Mearns Primary.

Barry has worked with the school over the past three years to get everyone more physically active, more often. This has involved, amongst other things, the following programmes:

bullet

active travel—encouraging children to walk or cycle to school and supporting Kirkhill’s walking bus initiative.

bullet

activity clubs with an emphasis on those who may not regularly participate in physical activity.

bullet

curricular PE support for teachers including the provision of in-service training

bullet

inter-school sports - Football, hockey and netball teams will be formed and will play against other local schools regularly.

bullet

Play Zone (active playgrounds) –Playground supervisors and Primary 6/7 pupils will be trained to deliver traditional games e.g. hopscotch & skipping during break-times.

bullet

supporting existing physical activity & health initiatives e.g. walk to school week, school sports days, and school health week.

bullet

sports club links—involving local sports clubs in school activities e.g. taster sessions for new sports.

bullet

fitness testing & activity logbook (P7)—to compare fitness levels across East Renfrewshire and across Scotland .

bullet

volunteer recruitment & development—to support school activities and teams volunteers (parents, teachers etc) will be trained and supported in a range of activities and sports.

In order to maintain these initiatives, the school does require parental help and support. Experience of sport doesn’t matter as Barry can help to get everyone qualified in coaching or leading a number of activities.

To get more information on active schools or to find out more about how to get qualified to coach an activity, give Barry a call on 07800 629645, contact him at Mearns Primary on 0141 560 3810 or e-mail him on cookb@ea.e-renfrew.sch.uk
