Poetry Competition

A large number of S1 and S2 entered the Poetry Competition held to celebrate National Poetry Day in October. Below are the winning entries

S1 1st Prize

Katrina Eves. Title: The Circle that wanted to be a Heart 1st Prize

They tell me I should be,
A simple shape you see,
With no corners, no points, no simple design,
I don’t even have a plain straight line.
What I would really like to be,
Instead of a boring shape like me,
Is a strong proud and beautiful heart,
It is my dream, I know in part.
People use that shape for love and hope,
If I was that shape, I’m sure I could cope.
It’s brave, daring, fearless and free,
Not like the cowardly shape like me.
I’m a shape that people care less about,
Not so much as the dot.
If I was a heart, my dreams would come true,
And I would be glad, I know I would too.
But for now I guess, I should just be,
Happy for who I am is me.

S1 2nd Prize

Bethany Dawson-Bowman. Title: My Hero

My Grandma is
Cheery
Kind
Lovely
She makes me very smiley!

She gives me
Poppets
Mentos
Skittles
And sometimes brings me cakes

She’s best at
Ironing
Knitting
Baking
But my favourite is her hugging!

When holidays come she’ll look after
My cousin’s dog
Her neighbour’s budgie
My fish
And my granddad

Her house will become a zoo!
Woof
Tweet
Glurp
Cough!

She has
Curly
Whirly
Swirly
Fluffy white hair!

So long as my mum and dad are working
She will always be there!
My grandma is my hero!

S1 3rd Prize

Duncan Ross. Title: If I were a Superhero

I would…….
climb walls, Move fast, stop crime
move stuff with my mind

I would……
be strong, shoot guns, help guys
shoot lasers from my eyes

Every night I would stand on a building
Watching over you
If the villains tried anything
I’ll flush them down the loo

My costume would be awesome
I’d be the city’s key
to stop the bad guys
then have chicken for my tea

I could brush my teeth
and turn off my light
going to bed knowing
that everyone would be alright.

S2 1st Prize

Rosalynd Robertson. Title: No Ordinary Hero

It’s ok if they’re not famous,
They don’t have to be well known,
They don’t need to have a number one hit,
Or own a crown and throne.

We could see them in the corner shop,
Or walk by them in the street,
Happy or sad, a mum or a dad,
They smile to the people they meet.

Does it really matter how they look,
Or what they do for fun?
Because deep inside there’s a hero,
In each and everyone.

S2 2nd Prize

Sarah McDonald. Title: Christine Ohuruogu

As the gun roared,
the start blocks clicked,
the loud cheers,
and determination, drew her closer to her
destination.

Her bright spikes,
glowed in the distance,
and looked like they were
on fire.

She neared the finish,
sweat trickling down her face,
her thought was of gold,
now only 10 metres separate
her from that ultimate glory.

Flashes from the photographers,
as she quickly approached
the finish,
her chest pushed out,
to cross the white line.
As the crowd roared,
the stop watch clicked,
victory was hers.

S2 3rd Prize

Hannah Quinn . Title: Ma dug’s a superhero!!!

Ma dug’s a superhero,
He got a cape an’ awe.
He can capture all the villains,
But still give me a paw.

Ma dug’s big but streamline,
Perfect for a hero.
I expect he’ll be home soon,
As it’s nearly teatime.

Ma dug knows Simon Cowell,
He thinks ma dug’s the best.
Ma dug can be quite cheeky though,
And told Simon he can’t dress to impress!

So yes ma dug looks better than Simon but not a good as Louis!
But just like any other dug he is a wee bit loopy!!!
