Physical Education Department
Aim of Physical Education Department
Physical Education contributes to the health and physical development of the pupil and seeks to instill in the pupil positive attitudes towards health, fitness and participation in sport.
Since the introduction of certified P.E. courses physical education has a greater input in the development of practical skills. Theoretical aspects of sport, science and evaluating performance plays a larger role.
P.E. is still mainly concerned with practical performance and the development of psychomotor skills. In the area of interpersonal skills P.E. contributes through emphasis on group and team activities where pupils interact and lean how to relate to each other in co-operative and competitive situations.
Skills ranging from basic movement patterns, to the application of refined skills using a variety of equipment and in a variety of situations are nurtured.
In contributing to emotional and moral development, P.E. offers pupils the opportunity to adopt various roles in different situations. Pupils learn about making and accepting decisions, taking responsibility for their own learning, and demonstrating qualities such as fairness, dependability and tolerance of others.
In a society, which offers greater opportunity for leisure, physical education would hope to foster in young people leaving school, positive attitudes toward personal well being and participation in sport Increased leisure time can be used in a purposeful and constructive manner.
