The Garbage City

On Friday 31st March 2006 two members of staff, Becky Frank and Bryan McLachlan, travelled to Cairo as part of a ten-strong team to do some construction work in the Garbage City

The Garbage City is region of Cairo where an immigrant group known as the Zabbaleen live and work. They collect the garbage from around the city, bring it back to their region and recycle as much as 80% of what they find. As a result the Garbage City is an extremely deprived and needy part of the city. The team were involved with the construction of a kindergarten and medical centre that will provide for the basic health and education needs of the people.

At Netherlee we thought of as many ways as possible to fund this work. The P3 children performed The King's Magic Cloaks on Tuesday 28th March and all proceeds went to the project. In addition to the performance an number of local businesses supported us with raffle prizes. The following businesses helped:

Toska (Potted Plant Arrangement)
Eye Candy (Fashion Handbags)
G.R. Brown Butchers (Voucher to the value of £25)
The Derby Cafe (Box of chocolates and Easter egg)
Ocean Hair and Beauty (Hairstyling session, Cut and Blow Dry)
Corgi Collection Toy Cars (Laura Rose Cards and Gifts)
Fine Wines
Bottle of Whisky (Angus Dundee Distillers)

In addition to these prizes two double glazing companies have helped us to glaze the property with a gift of free windows. Blairs Double Glazing have committed to donating all external windows, a gift amounting to £2400. To find out more about them click here.

Blairs of Scotland

Another company that has donated enough money to refurbish one room is A.Carroll Double Glazing. Their business address is 10 Kings Park Road. Tel: 649 9930. Our sincere thanks goes to both companies for their generous gifts.

A total amount for this particular fundraising venture will be available soon.
