Pupil Committee Members

Four Primary 7 pupils and one pupil from each of the other classes.

There are 15 pupil representatives in total.

How it operates and How often It Meets

Children from each class put themselves forward to join the committee. They then prepare a speech for rest of class explaining why they will be good candidates for Eco class representative. The class then vote. The Eco Committee is very popular and children are very enthusiastic about being members of the committee.

The Eco Committee meets at least once a month and often more frequently when organising special events.

Minutes are taken by the secretary (Currently John Bruce -P7) and each representative shares details of the meetings with the rest of their class.

The older children buddy the younger members of the committee and support them to ensure their full participation in all Eco events.

Reports are regularly given to the school board and PTA by the school management team. Parents are also informed of Eco updates via the newsletter.

How did you undertake your environmental review?

Our most recent review was carried out in October 2008. The Eco committee members were split into three groups. Each group worked with an adult member of the committee and focused on different parts of the review. This involved the pupils interviewing various members of staff such as office staff, the janitor, kitchen staff and the active schools co-ordinator.

How did you decide on the targets for your action plan?

Each group carried out their review and reported to the whole Committee their findings. The Committee then decided on areas, which needed to be maintained, and areas that needed to be developed. The children then used the information from the review to compile the action plan.

The committee also spoke to the whole school at assembly and circulated the Eco Suggestion box around each class to ensure all pupils had the opportunity to put forward their ideas for the new action plan.

4) How far have you progressed towards your targets?

Since our last Eco assessment, here are some of the things we have completed/ been involved in

        8) Please describe your school’s Day of Action?

Our Day of Action actually turned into a few days of Eco fun and had a festive theme. Our focus this year was on re using and recycling. We invited visitors in from Starling Learning (RSPB) they took over the large top open area of the school and made Christmas crafts from things from our natural environment and using junk we had collected with the upper school. They also made bird cakes and bird feeders from junk for our garden and playground area. The older pupils then held workshops for the younger children passing on their newly acquired recycling and re using skills so the whole school made fantastic Christmas decorations and crafts. It was great and quite different from our previous actions days.

For the past 2 years as well as our Action Days we have also have 2 Fairtrade events each year which the whole school are very involved in and the Eco committee help to run and organise. Our next event is a Fairtrade café and stall/Africa Awareness afternoon for parents and the local community on 6th March.

We were asked to visit and advise a nursery in Bridge of Allan on how to start the Eco schools project. Miss Duffy and 6 pupils visited the nursery and spoke to the children and staff about how to start their Eco programme. We even helped them write their Eco code. The nursery have now been awarded their silver and Bronze awards are are currently applying for 1st Green flag.

The Eco committee are launching a campaign/poster competition to try to reduce dog mess at school gates. Winning poster design is to be displayed on school railings.

10) How was your Eco – Code developed?

Our first Eco Code was formed in 2003. The children updated it in 2004 as part of the tenth anniversary of Eco, and we were delighted to receive a runner up award in the competition.

Forty five Primary sevens worked on changing the Eco code, they decided to make it more appropriate to the whole world instead of focusing solely on our school.

Having had the same Eco code for a few years as part of Topic work on Our Environment a group of our current P7 pupils created a new code to the tune of a very popular High School Musical song which they felt would be easier for younger pupils to understand and learn. Their own classmates loved it and when they performed it for the whole school at an assembly the feed back from the Eco representatives was excellent, so a new code was created! The new code is sung at assemblies and is displayed in all classrooms.

11) What are your plans for future Eco Schools activities?

Our immediate plan is to complete our current action plan.

.

We plan to make full use of the Eco Schools website to remain up to date with projects and issues that might benefit the school community and the world as a whole. We will also maintain our flexible attitude to ensure we take advantage of all new Eco opportunities that come our way and follow up areas of pupil interest that may surface in the course of next year. Almost every few week exciting new Eco projects evolve in the school, whether they be Topic generated or from an outside agency or even just come about due to pupils own interest/initiative. Due to the enthusiasm and support of the children, staff and parents in St Mark’s we are lucky to be able to follow up these projects and therefore have a real vibrant and ever inspiring approach to Eco throughout the school.

Coming in to the Spring term we are hoping to introduce some new plants and vegetables to our garden area. We are currently in the process of applying to "Carts Greenspace" for advice on the best plants for our garden and any possible help with further developing the garden area.

We hope to continue to develop an awareness of Global diversity. We have a now have the link with Eliya Chimtengo School in Malawi and it will be fascinating learning about environmental issues from the school.

The Eco committee in conjunction with Local Community wardens are just starting to plan their tidy up of dog mess immediately outside school gates and will be launching their poster competition very soon.

As we are very confident that we are doing a good job maintaining all our current Eco initiatives within our school we are to looking in to expanding our work further in to the local community. We plan to do this by teaming up with "Go Greener" a local environmental community group to join in more local community projects. We are in discussions with "Go Greener" to see how we can get involved in some of the following upcoming projects – Fruit tree planting, Barrhead Go Greener project, Community re-cycling project and Make a Difference day (in Neilston)Our Local Councillor, Councillor Phillips is coming in to talk to the Eco committee about how the whole school can get involved in these projects.

12) How has the experience of Eco Schools benefited your school?

The experience of Eco schools has had a huge impact upon our school. The Eco project is integrated into all areas of the school curriculum and is very much imbedded in the school ethos.

Eco has given all pupils the opportunity to recognise their importance in the world and offered them the chance to reflect upon the impact of their actions on the local community and the world as a whole.

The various Eco initiatives in the school have given the children positive learning experiences in which they have developed their knowledge of environmental issues. As well as this, the Eco projects have had a significant impact upon the personal and social development of pupils in the school. Eco has helped pupils develop a sense of pride in themselves and in their school and with this has come a respect for themselves and the environment.

The pupils are delighted with their achievements as an Eco school and take a great pride in the fact that the school has three green flags and feel great pride sharing this with visitors (as any visitor to the school will be able to tell you!). We are now very excited about the prospect of achieving our fourth green flag and feel very happy that we now feel confident enough to advise and encourage others on their Eco journey. We really look forward to a visit from Eco assessors so we can share with you all our good practise over the past 2 years and our plans for the future. We hope you will be as proud of all we have achieved as we are!
