The Learning Centre

What is a Learning Centre?

A Learning Centre is a small class within the school.  The environment has elements of both home and the classroom.

Children will learn through practical experiences involving co-operating and working with others.

We will place particular emphasis on:

·        Language development

·        Task Completion

·        Personal targets.

Why have a Learning Centre?

Some children find being part of a full class in school difficult.  This can greatly affect what they achieve.  Through the Learning Centre children can be individually supported in developing the skills necessary for learning and communicating.

Research has shown that schools which provide Learning Centres have the benefit of raised achievement and a positive impact on behaviour.

Children gain confidence and participate more in class.

How the Learning Centre Works?

Children will spend part of each day in the Learning Centre. They will always return to their class each day for whole class activities such as PE.  Children begin the day in their own class for registration.

Learning Centre staff will collect the children from their classrooms and accompany them to the Learning Centre.  They will spend break times and lunchtime in the playground with their friends and classmates.

There is close liaison between the child’s class teacher and Learning Centre staff to agree learning targets.   Each child’s progress is reviewed regularly.  Children would work in the Learning Centre for between 2-4 terms.

The Learning Centre Teacher and Class Teacher plan together when and how children are integrated into their own classes.  It is a gradual process, to ensure success.

Keeping Parents involved

 Learning Centre staff will:

·        Arrange meetings to discuss child’s progress

·        Offer support and guidance on meeting child’s needs

·        Run parent workshops
