Art
S1/2

In Art and design, the course for S1/2 is designed to enable pupils to enjoy creative work, build their confidence, develop basic skills and learn about visual elements of; Line, Shape, Pattern, Colour, Tone, Texture and Form, which are seen as the foundations of all art work.

The course consists of two 18 week blocks over S1 and S2. In each

block three different units are explored, at least one unit is design

based, one of is an expressive unit and the third may involve written

work in which pupils will be required to respond to and evaluate the work

of different artists and designers. Pupils will develop their skills through

drawing, painting, mixed media and 3D work.

Pupils are given fortnightly homework’s to given to develop observational

drawing skills begun in class.

Intermediate 1 and 2

Pupils follow a two-year course leading to an award at Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2. These courses are part of the National Qualification framework and therefore pupils who attain a pass at Intermediate 2 may be eligible to proceed to Higher. Pupils presented at Intermediate 1 level do not sit a written exam but are required to write a summary for each unit.

Course Outline

The course comprises three units, which are of equal value:

· Expressive Unit

Pupils work with a variety of materials and techniques to visually express their own thoughts and feeling in areas such as Still Life, Portraiture and the Natural/Built environment.

· Design Unit

This unit requires pupils to solve design problems based on a set brief, this is achieved by investigating, researching and developing their own solutions in 2D or 3D form.

· Art and Design Studies

This written unit links directly to the two practical units and enables pupils to further develop skills of research, and investigation and demonstrate knowledge, understanding and appreciation of visual art and design.

Homework

Practical work for both Expressive and Design units will require, on occasions, additional input at home in order for strict deadlines to be met and to develop skills in handling media.

Advanced Higher, Higher and Intermediate 1/2

Drama
In Drama, the units for S1/2 are designed to be an enjoyable introduction to the subject and an exciting exploration of the techniques required. Through the skills of voice, movement, improvisation and character, pupils explore a wide range of topics, themes and situations.

Further, Drama encourages the development of the creative imagination and the ability to communicate in social situations. The learning experience of working with others in groups is integral to the process of drama. Homework is given on a weekly basis. All units are designed to build on the pupils’ previous experience and prepare them for future ones.

The course consists of two 18 weeks blocks, one in each S1 and S2.

Intermediate 1/2

In S3 and S4 students have the opportunity to follow an Intermediate course for which they will have been well prepared in S1/2.

S3 is structured into 3 short introduction units followed by work on the first 2 NABs.

S4 continues work on the second and third NABs and preparation for the final written and practical examinations.

Throughout the two year course opportunities to perform and create work for various audiences will be given (links with feeder Primary schools are well established). Students will also be expected to audition for or take on a backstage role in the school productions.

Regular Theatre visits will be organised to allow pupils to see a variety of performances and styles.

Advanced Higher, Higher and Intermediate 1/2

In S5/6 students have the opportunity to follow the Advanced Higher (S6 only), Higher or Intermediate courses, which they will have been well prepared in S3/4.Detailed course information is available in the courses outlines or from Mrs Gracie.

Music
The goal of the music department is to assist pupil in becoming, imaginative and confident musicians. The S1-S6 course at St Luke's High School offers an interesting and varied approach to all elements of music.

Concert trips and workshops are arranged throughout the year to enhance the curriculum and bring pupils to the world of music outside the classroom walls. Numerous school concerts and performance opportunities are organised throughout the the year and pupils of all ages and abilities are encouraged to be part of these ventures.

There are many opportunities for pupils to develop their musical ability through a number of extra-curricular activities organised after school and at lunchtimes within the department.
