Departmental Aims
Aims of Art and Design
Study of Art and Design promotes an awareness, appreciation and understanding of our world through design and visual arts. Everyday life is hugely influenced and shaped by the creative and design industries, with artists and designers playing a major role in making our world what it is.
Courses in Art and Design provide a rewarding and enjoyable opportunity for students to be creative and express themselves. They are encouraged to experiment with a wide range of techniques, media and technology to explore and respond to their world in an imaginative and creative way.
There are three main elements within the Art and Design courses. These are Expressive activity, which involves pupils in expressing their thoughts, ideas and responses to a subject or theme visually, Design activity, which involves pupils in solving a design problem and encourages them to use their creative and imaginative skills to produce ideas and present a final solution. The third element – Art and Design Studies - allows pupils to undertake research into artists and designers who inspire them and their design and expressive work.
Our aim is to provide our students with a broad spectrum of valuable skills, in addition to the artistic skills traditionally associated with the subject, which will equip them well for life beyond school. We aspire to help our pupils develop the four capacities as successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens. Through Art and Design education we aim to:
· Foster creative thinking, an enterprising approach and the ability to be inventive, innovative and imaginative
· Enhance problem solving skills and the ability to develop and take ideas forward
· Encourage independence, personal responsibility and self belief
· Develop communication skills and the ability to work with others
· Raise awareness and understanding of cultural, environmental, social and ethical issues within contexts that our students can relate to
· Provide pupils with a context within which they can express and explore their beliefs and ideas.
Beyond our department
In providing an Art and Design education that develops the four capacities we aim to educate pupils as a whole, not only equip them with subject skills and knowledge. It is important that pupils can see the links and overlaps between subjects and believe that they are being educated for life beyond the “compartments” of school subjects. In our day-to-day teaching we create conceptual links between subjects by setting work in context and drawing on lessons taught by other subjects across the school. Additionally, we strive to take part in cross-curricular learning and teaching opportunities to demonstrate real links. In adopting this approach, we aim to assist in preparing young people for life beyond school and to provide opportunities to develop a wide range of transferable skills.
We aim to take Art and Design beyond our department and promote creativity, in its many forms, across the school. This is done through regular exhibitions of pupil work throughout the year, which allow a wider audience of pupils, staff and parents to view the exciting work that pupils produce in this subject. In addition, Art and Design work is permanently displayed around the school. We also aim to contribute to the wider life of the school and community through our involvement in events and projects such as the School Show, Fashion Show, production of school calendar, links with Eastwood Theatre Arts organisation etc.
