Course Content

The intermediate level Chemistry courses studies in third and fourth year look at chemistry and its importance in our lives. The courses help pupils to develop their scientific knowledge, and at the same time teach pupils how to think scientifically. The content in each course is as follows.

Intermediate One

Unit One: Chemistry and life

The unit looks at the chemicals involved in keeping us alive and healthy. Production of food in plants, use of food in our bodies, and the effects of drugs are examined.

Unit Two : Chemistry in action

The unit examines different types of substances, how substances react together, and the properties, uses, and reactions of acids.

Unit Three : Everyday Chemistry

In this unit the importance of metals is examined, sources of fuels and pollution problems are looked at, and production, properties, and problems associated with plastic are touched upon.

Intermediate Two

Unit One: The world of carbon

This unit shows how important carbon is in our lives. Most of the important chemicals in the living world contain carbon. From our hair and skin to fuels and plastics, the reactions of substances which contain carbon are examined.

Unit Two: Building Blocks

The unit examines atoms and shows that, by understanding atoms we can understand the properties of different substances.

Unit Three: Acids and Metals

Here we look at acids and their reactions, from the production of acid rain to cures for indigestion. The chemical principles behind these examples of everyday chemical reactions are examined.

Assessment

Pupils are assessed regularly on their progress in the course by written tests. These give the pupil regular feedback on their progress and help develop study skills. Practical abilities are assessed via experiments within the course.

Classwork

In chemistry the work in the class will be a mixture of practical investigation through experiments and class lessons. Through each topic emphasis is placed on developing problem solving skills. Pupils are taught to work with a range of modern apparatus.

Homework

Regular homework is an integral part of the chemistry courses. Homework is given on a weekly basis.

Careers

People who have studied chemistry are found in a wide range of occupations. It is an essential or preferred qualification for many courses in the sciences, medical studies, engineering or technology.
