Course Content

The Geography courses on offer next year will be Intermediate 1 and Intermediate 2

Both these courses cover the same topics

The difference between them is in the degree of depth

This allows flexibility and ensures that all students will end up

following the course which is most appropriate for them.

The course will cover three different units.

The Physical Environment

Understanding how the scenery of certain parts of Britain has been formed

How people make use of these areas

The need to protect scenic areas

The Human Environment

Patterns of population change and migration in the world

Changes taking place in world cities

How change has affected the countryside in developed and developing world

Environmental Interactions

Development and Health

Environmental hazards

Skills

The course develops Geographical Methods and Techniques. These skills relate to understanding and evaluating information which has been presented in a number of different forms; and presenting information using a wide range of techniques.

Assessment

There will be a unit assessment at the end of each unit.

Methodology

We learn from the world which is all around us. When it is practical, pupils may go on trips to study Geography at first hand. Extensive use will be made of videos, photographs, slides, maps, CD Rom and the Internet to bring the world into the classroom. There will be an opportunity to take part in Geography fieldwork by visiting the French Alps at the end of Third Year.

Homework

Regular homework is an integral part of the course. Students will also be expected to use the book , note and on-line material for their own independent revision.

Careers

Intermediate Geography is a stepping-stone towards Higher Geography. Higher Geography is an accepted entry qualification for all university courses including Law, Medicine, Business, Accountancy, Architecutre, and Planning.

Its unique nature means that students can continue to study Geography at University, as part of a degree in Science, Arts or Environmental Science.

Employers recognise the value of Geographers. With their wide knowledge and understanding of the world in which we live, their ability to communicate using a wide variety of techniques, and their ability to understand and interpret information presented in a wide variety of methods, Geographers find employment in a wide variety of areas.

Lawyer, Journalism and the Media,Civil Service, Management, Surveying, Teaching, Nursing, Social Work, Personnel Work, Management, Police, Armed Services are only some of these.

Because Geography is also a scientific subject, there are some areas where the more specialised skills and knowledge of Geography are particularly useful. These include;

Planning, Travel and Tourism, Environmental Conservation, Countryside Management, Geologist, Weather Forecasting.
