Tracking Performance
The government has initiated a number of strategies aimed at raising standards of attainment through the National Priority and Local Improvement Objectives framework. There are certain whole school key indicators of performance in national examinations termed national priority measures. Raising standards of performance is a key priority of East Renfrewshire Education Department. The council is committed to maintaining and, indeed improving, the educational achievements of its young people and to deliver this we monitor, measure and analyse the performance of all our pupils from early years to post-16.
5-14
Local authorities monitor 5-14 attainment in relation to the percentage of pupils attaining or exceeding minimum 5-14 levels for their age. For primary and secondary schools the 5-14 indicators cover the core skills of reading, writing and mathematics. In 2007-08, the high performance in primary school national assessment results was maintained in Reading and Writing with 91% and 86% of young people achieving the appropriate levels respectively. In Mathematics there was a small increase on the previous year's high attainment with 94% of pupils achieving the appropriate level. The last recorded national performance in reading was 81%, for writing 74% and for mathematics 82%. National assessment results at S2 in Reading and Writing rose by 5% respectively on the previous year's performance to 86% and 75%. Very high levels of attainment in Mathematics in S2 were maintained from the previous year, with 84% of young people achieving the expected levels (the last recorded national averages being 65%, 52%, and 60% respectively).
Attendance
Attendance levels continue to remain high in East Renfrewshire. For primary schools the attendance rate for school session 2007-08 was 96.5% the same as the previous year. In secondary schools the attendance rate 94.7%, also the same as 2006-07. In Scotland the 2007-08 overall attendance rate was 95.1% in primary and 91.0% in secondary.
