Course Content
The Physics courses introduce Physics through its impact on everyday life. It helps pupils to make sense of their physical environment and to develop the skills of scientific problem solving.
It concentrates on areas of particular interest in the modern world in which physics principles can be seen to operate.
The courses are :
Intermediate 1
Telecommunications (20 hr)
Practical Electricity
Radiations
Sound and Music
Movement
Electronics
Intermediate 2
Mechanics and Heat
Electricity & Electronics
Waves and Optics (20 hr)
Radioactivity
Studying these areas offers opportunities for acquiring knowledge and understanding of the essential facts of physics and how to apply this in problem solving situations.
The development of practical abilities is an important objective of the course.
Pupils are encouraged to work competently and confidently with physics equipment such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, multimeters, data capture devices, computers....
In carrying out experimental and investigative work in Physics, students learn practical techniques, data handling and report writing skills.
Assessment
Work is assessed on performance in the following course elements:
Knowledge and Understanding
Problem Solving
Practical Abilities
Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving are assessed by written examination at the end of each unit and externally at the end of the course.
Practical abilities are assessed by the teacher in at least 1 written report of a practical activity.
Methodology/Resources
A variety of teaching methods is employed. Pupils will be involved in different activities such as practical investigations, experiments, problem solving exercises, and will work as individuals, small groups, or a whole class. The most up-to-date equipment and books available for these courses are used in the department. Computers, multimedia projectors and internet sources are used where appropriate within the course.
Homework
Homework is given on a weekly basis and is generally reinforcement of work carried out in class.
It will be in the form of knowledge and understanding questions and problem solving exercises.
Careers
You will find people who have studied Physics in a wide range of occupations.
It is essential or preferred qualification for all occupations involved in science, medicine, engineering and technology.
