Close Reading
In close reading exercises, it is important to recognise the type of question you are answering. Use this key to give you help in working out what sort of answer the examiner is looking for. This key is around Intermediate 2 level, but should be useful for Level F to Higher.

EXPRESSION –
eg – “Quote two expressions…” An expression is a way of saying
something. It could be a word or a phrase. NOT a whole sentence.

WORD “Quote
a word” – your answer should just be one word. word choice – if you are
writing about word choice YOU NEED TO SAY WHICH WORD THEY CHOSE. If you are ever singling out a word,
present it: ·
“the word” – ·
the
meaning (I2/H –
denotation and connotation)– the answer.

SENTENCE STRUCTURE
Your answer will be likely to require this type of answer: ·
a feature of sentence structure – ·
how it affects the meaning/impact ·
– the answer. (sentence types, punctuation, repetition,
word order, lists…) punctuation ·
what the punctuation is ·
what its function is ·
what it actually does in this instance how it affects the meaning/impact

COMPARE OR CONTRAST Compare – looking at two things to
highlight similarity. Contrast – to highlight the
differences. In an answer about contrast you need both sides.

LINK QUESTIONS Eg – How does
the sentence “blah blah blah” act as a link? The answer
should look like:

TONE – how does the writer ‘sound’? |
|
CONTEXT “Explain how the context helped you to
arrive at the meaning of (a word/phrase)” Answer:
Then explain how that clue helped you to figure out the meaning.

EVALUATION These questions are looking for your real opinion. There is no specific answer. Write a sensible answer and use quotes or evidence to prove it is a sensible answer.
