NOVEMBER ![]() |
|
Here’s a secret - grown ups often lie! Had you
noticed this yourself? Often we lie to avoid saying what we really want to
say. That’s usually the word ‘No!’ If you don’t believe me, here’s an example or
two; ‘We’ll
talk about this later.’ or ‘ You’ll have to ask your mum.’ or
‘Wait and see’. |
| Familiar? Teachers, politicians, as well as parents spend a lot of time avoiding telling the truth. Can you spot the telltale phrases that the truth is NOT being told? Listen out for the porkies for a few days before you try this challenge. It won’t be hard. Honestly! |
|
Your challenge Write down what your parent says but what is really meant. For example: ‘Have you tidied your room yet?’ really means ‘ I know you haven’t tidied your room and I want it done now.’
Or
a teacher ‘You over there. Stop that or I’ll report you.’ really means ‘I won’t do anything because I don’t know your name.’
Or
a politician ‘A lot of taxpayers money has been spent on this’ means ‘I don’t know the exact amount but it’s your money, not mine, I’m spending’.
|
| Over to you now. Write down some things parents, teachers or politicians say and what you think they REALLY mean. Hand in the results of your careful listening, by the end of November, to your English teacher. |
